Social Engineering- workshop for students on Prezi

Hello everyone!

As we discuss the perils and education of social engineering, I want to share my favourite project so far.

I have created a Prezi workshop about social engineering~ the danger for teens. This will be shown to staff in the fall in the hopes of spearheading an anti-bullying and social engineering awareness campaign at our school. This Prezi is targeting classes from  grades 5 to 8. Step one of the project would be to view video and invite class discussions and opinions.

My goal is to then invite teachers to form discussion groups in their classes who will review the Presentation content. They would then write 'script' of their own for presentation contest. Groups would rehearse and best presentation posted on class blog.
When the Prezi comes up just let it upload then use the arrow > below to click one link at a time. Youtube vids play automatically, you can click on links and visit sites then just return to Prezi and > to continue in presentation.

Social Engineering...lack of education leaves us confused

As a psychologist major the first thing that came to mind was socialization. As psychologists and sociologists studied human behaviour they recognized various types of learning ( ex. cognitive, conditioned) and explained that we as humans teach children and other people how to behave.
Humans become socialized, influenced, conditioned to behave certain ways. Though as human beings we are given free will and a mind to make our own choices these socializations take place often without our knowing. For example, a child will learn and react to be terrified of spiders as they were conditioned to do so because of experience, modelling by an adult or to avoid discomfort or to gain pleasure. Whatever the motivations~ people’s behaviour can be shaped.

If you love psychology, watch this little documentary to see social engineering sociology style as babies’ behaviours are manipulated by testing and experimentation. Scott Noble’s documentary entitled “Psywar” documents how founder of Behaviourism, John B. Watson. I have included an ‘edited’ version ( as original is a little difficult to watch)

Now, social engineering as a term we talk about today is a collection of techniques used to manipulate PEOPLE into behaving and performing actions in a way that easily and willingly divulges confidential information. It can be looked at as how someone can be ‘tricked’ because they are gullible or uninformed~ social engineering does this but focusing on gathering information on or access to your computer. It is an exploitation of the basics of human behaviours like willingness to please,trust, greed to gain free rewards, respect for authority or even indifference or lack of education.


There are technical strategies such as: 
 
Pnishing~ fronting legitimate authority, business that is requiring your authentication like pin, password or even VISA and often install viruses on your computer.
Vishing~ using phone solicitors
Spam~email viruses that snatch info without your knowing
Pop Ups~ my shame was falling for a pop-up message that I had a virus and the logo looked very familiar! The computer crashed and only way out was giving out my info. I didn’t completely fall for it and brought computer in to my techie!
Software downloads often attach viruses.

The social engineering  movement, however is discovering that the shortcut to hacking, and working their way through your computer is simply watching YOU, picking up a business card, following the easy info you give out to newsletters or falling prey to impersonators who trick you.

The worst part is that you may never even know you have been exploited or manipulated.
Just as little Arthur learned to fear rats because of Dr. John B. Watson’s experiments with conditioning...we have changed our behaviour vis a vis giving out information to anyone without more information and education as a result of this blog post!

Great websites for elementary online learning and Mimio/Smartboard

Here I complete my assignment about online learning and wanted to share with you some GREAT elementary interactive websites that are perfect to use as a centre in elementary or as a lesson, peer activity using the interactive board.


The criteria I chose to pick the best were
1) relevance to grade and curriculum
2) modern and visually aesthetic
3) sharing, ability for multiple players and turns
4) less advertising
5) multiple grade choice on the site

Here is a great listening activity that could be used from early primary to junior depending upon your goal. It is a great assessment tool for auditory skills, short term memory and listening skills in language and math. Otherwise a good self-directed student activity on Smart Board!

This kindergarten math activity invites students to guess the birthday wish based on sounds for phonemic awareness.

For intermediate editing practice this activity is great interactive and opens for students and teacher to explain why a choice was made and investigate grammatical rules.
End of Errors- editing with grammar in mind

For junior to intermediate grades the Editing Room  creates characters who run spelling, grammar and punctuation editing activities. Very engaging! Full on content.

The convention game show activity teaches and practices the language conventions: synonyms, antonyms and homophones. The students must go through lessons then up to three players practice.

Using the filters and focusing on flash files on OERB made a great difference to find the quality of learning objects I am so eager to use with SmartBoard, Mimio or even with individual laptops for each student or pairs.

Prezi on iPhone Apps for LD students

Today my challenge was to take the assignment on researching Learning Objects and presenting my findings by teaching myself to use PREZI. What an easy and appealing way to create a presentation!! It's my new favourite.

The site provides the BEST tutorials so I won't link here. On the site just download, watch tutorials, create and edit presentations then present and or share them. Just click the PREZI to start and scroll in and out to make larger or smaller. Click youtube vids to see presentations and how to use software! Once you are in the centre it works like an iPhone touch, you can drag, use zoom etc.

HOW to embed documents and video into your Blog

I spent a few hours on this today so am sharing it all with you.
To include documents and videos in your blog download Sribd.com. This is a free web-based document sharing community and publishing platform. It can be used as a type of Facebook page but in this case I used it to upload a presentation and embed it in my blog.
The final step was to load the youtube video I used to learn how to do this for you.
I installed anyvideoconverter and tried to use it to convert the youtube video and embed it but I didn't have the youtube option.
Back to work I go...
Found new youtube software called clipnabber. Let's see if it worked...
I posted it up top...it does not have audio. I will record my own how to later for you.
It worked!!!
I also tried numerous other vid applications which all worked. Anthony assures me that 
anyvideoconverter works but my version does not have the youtube button.
